reMarkable is Linux and partially FOSS. This means that it can be easily accessed and customized. For the moment, I’m trying to fix some minor problems of the device. I’m going to update this post with the solutions I came up with.
SSH conncetion
If you check the rM menu on the About session, you can check which is the username and password you can use to remotely accessing it via ssh root@10.11.99.1

Activating the tablet Web UI
When I received my tablet, I tried to use the device’s HTTP interface 10.11.99.1, but nmap -sT -v 10.11.99.1
claimed that only a SSH port was opened. Then I had to surf the file system: I recognized that the /etc/
folder containes the remarkable.conf
: besides some clear saved passwords (WiFi, log-in pin, root’s password and so forth), you can recognize the WebInterfaceEnabled=false
parameter. Just change it to true
and reboot your device to make the web interface start. The web user interface’s source code is available at /usr/share/remarkable/webui/
. It seems that, via this interface, you can only download the documents stored in your reMarkable. I sense that, by analizing this source code, the place where the files are stored may be retreived.
Where are my documents and drawings stored?
The documents, your writings and drawings are stored in this folder: /home/root/.local/share/remarkable/xochitl/
. Please note that the original files are not “.png”s, but is a reMarkable binary format providing the informations of the strokes. Similarly, it seems that the pdf files are extended with separate informations concerning separate hilights and strokes performed by the user on top of the document. In particular, all the files having the .lines
extension contain all the informations pertaining to your drawings.
Each lines
file starts with a string "reMarkable lines with selections and layers"
followed by the number of the page number contained within the file.
How to crosscompile a program for reMarkable?
Your reMarkable is an ARM A9 architecture. For this reason, it is sufficient to compile a program with arm-linux-gnueabihf-gcc
. This cross compiler can be installed via the Debian/Ubuntu package “gcc-arm-linux-gnueabihf”.
